Parent Recharge meets the first and third Thursday mornings (September 5 & 19 and October 3 & 17) featuring unstructured conversation with other parents and caregivers. On the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays, there are focused discussions around a specific topic. Join us to learn, laugh, ask questions, and enjoy a morning out while your children socialize in our playroom. Coming up:

August 22: Parenting Bravely. Dr. Brené Brown is a professor and researcher who has a lot to teach us about courage, shame, vulnerability and empathy. In this two-part class, we will listen to and discuss her Ted Talks and interviews, and walk away with ideas and inspiration for “parenting bravely.” Led by Patrice Baker. Sign up now

August 29: No program this week.

September 12: Toilet Learning Made Easier. Before the next battle over the toilet, arm yourself with information and support from parents who have lived through potty training. Find out how to tell when children are really ready, and how to work with them, not against them. With Parkie Boley. Sign up now

September 26: Go to Sleep! Baby not sleeping through the night? Child resisting bedtime? Teen not getting enough sleep? These aren’t good for anyone, child or parent. They can result in cranky behavior, difficulty getting through the day, poor sleep habits and stressed relationships. Yet it’s hard for overtired parents to make a plan and carry it out on their own. Come to this Q&A with Randy Tallent, Families First’s Child Development Specialist. Sign up now

October 10: Special Education and Individualized Education Plans. What’s an IEP? How do I know if my child needs one? Does last year’s IEP still fit? Join this discussion to learn more about your basic rights and how you can become a more effective member of your child’s IEP team. Facilitated by Jo Ann Clement. Sign up now

October 24: Coping With Worry and Anxiety. Feeling  “stressed out” can impact children’s  self-esteem, academic functioning, social relationships, and family life. This talk will provide you with an understanding of how anxiety impacts children and adolescents and practical ways to improve coping skills. Dr. Laura Rubin of Portsmouth Neuropsychology Center will address the following key points:
1) Identify signs of stress/anxiety in your child
2) Learn strategies for helping to decrease your child’s stress/anxiety
3) Become more aware of how parent stress contributes to child stress
