Winter Parenting and Family Programs in Portsmouth



PORTSMOUTH – Whether it’s a parenting class with free child care, or a parent-child playgroup, Families First is a great place to fight cabin fever and learn at the same time. All parents and children are welcome at these programs offered by Families First, the Seacoast’s community health center. Most are free of charge, and all include free child care, with dinner for kids during evening programs. Advance signup is needed for all programs (unless “Drop-ins OK” is noted), and is always needed for child care. Call 603-422-8208 ext. 2.

Parenting classes offered at the Community Campus in January are: • Taming the “Gimmes,” Tuesday, Jan. 6, 6 to 7:30 p.m. • Helping Young Children Get Along, Thursday, Jan. 8, 9 to 11:30 a.m. • Keeping Kids Active During a Long Winter, Tuesday, Jan. 13, 6 to 7:30 p.m. • More 1-2-3 Magic: Responsible Behavior and Self-Esteem, Tuesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, 6 to 7:30 p.m. • Discipline that Teaches Life Skills, Thursdays, Jan. 22 and 29, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. • Parent Recharge, first and third Thursday each month, 9:30-11 am. • Living with Teens. Jan. 14 and the second Wednesday of each month, 6-7:30 pm. This month’s topic: “Help! My Kid’s Internet Use is Out of Control!” • Grandparenting. first and third Wednesday of each month, 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Families First also offers family activity programs – a great way to beat cabin fever. • Toddler Playtime. Mondays, weekly; 9:30-11 am. Drop-ins OK. • Babytime. Tuesdays, weekly, 10-11:30 a.m. Drop-ins OK. • Preschool Playtime. Fridays, weekly; 9:30-11 am. Drop-ins OK. • Saturday Playgroup, for children up to age 6 and their parents. Saturdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Cost: $20 per four-week session, per family. Next session: January 10-31. Signup required by Jan. 7.

In addition to the above programs offered in Portsmouth, Families First will also offer parenting classes and family programs in Epping, Raymond, Fremont, Exeter, Seabrook, Hampton and North Hampton this winter.
